  • Senate Parental Rights Bill Gains Traction

    After last week’s relatively quiet start to the legislative short session, Senate lawmakers introduced this week a revised version of House Bill 755, entitled “Parents’ Bill of Rights.” Senate leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) joined other Republican lawmakers in a press conference late Tuesday afternoon to introduce the bill, which was then quickly heard and passed in the Senate Education Committee the following day without amendments.

  • Governor Cooper Unveils FY 2022-23 Budget Proposal

    Governor Cooper released on Wednesday his 2022-23 State Budget Proposal, entitled “Building on Success,” which includes over half a billion dollars in proposed investments to education. “North Carolina is emerging from the pandemic stronger than before, and we will sustain that only if we invest in a strong foundation for our people: a quality education, good jobs and infrastructure, and access to affordable healthcare,” Cooper said in a statement.

  • 2022 Dr. Samuel Houston Jr. Leadership Awardees Named

    The North Carolina School Superintendents' Association (NCSSA) and the North Carolina Alliance for School Leadership Development (NCASLD) have announced the selection of the following as the recipients of the Dr. Samuel Houston Jr. Leadership Award: Dr. Kimberly Dechant, Director of Recruitment and Induction, Asheville City Schools; Dr. Danielle Jones, Assistant Superintendent for Middle Schools, Durham Public Schools; Dr. Lionel Kato, Chief Officer-Learning Supports, Winston-Salem/Forsyth Schools; Dr. Ben Williams, Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services, Wilson County Schools. This annual award is presented to graduates of the NCSSA/NCASLD Aspiring Superintendent Program, a program designed to empower transformational education leaders for North Carolina’s public schools.

    North Carolina Senator Don Davis (D-Greene) was awarded the 2022 Champion for Children Award during the NC Association of School Administrators’ (NCASA) 2022 Conference on Educational Leadership.

  • Superintendents, Community College Presidents Convene in Greensboro

    Over 150 attendees from across the state came together for the Convening of Superintendents and Community College Presidents on Friday, March 5, to share best practices and future concerns for the students of North Carolina. The Convening, which took place in Greensboro, focused on changing labor market needs and innovative practices for engaging students and communities in workforce development.

    Edgecombe County Public Schools Superintendent Named 2022 A. Craig Phillips NC Superintendent Of The Year

    Dr. Valerie Bridges, Superintendent of Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS), was named the 2022 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year at an awards ceremony held Nov. 11.

    8 Nominees Vie For 2022 Superintendent Of The Year Award; State Winner To Be Announced November 11 In Greensboro

    The North Carolina A. Craig Phillips Superintendent of the Year is chosen jointly by the North Carolina Association of School Administrators (NCASA), NCASA’s core affiliate the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association (NCSSA) and the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA), with support and sponsorship from worldwide education leader Scholastic. The honor is awarded to a superintendent who exhibits outstanding leadership in service to K-12 public schools and is named in honor of the late A. Craig Phillips, former State Superintendent of Public Instruction in NC.
